Gambling is defined as anything which can have a wager for material goods or money.
Common ones include:
- Sports betting
- Fantasy league betting
- Phone/Tablet Applications
- Office Pools
- Stock Market
- Lottery games (scratch, power ball, hot lotto)
An individual struggling with gambling can live day-to-day life normally for a while. Eventually some of the warning signs listed below will start catching up.
Warnings MAY include some of the following:
- Gambling is always on the mind
- Relies on others to get out debt
- Routinely absent or late to work
- Unexplained money lose or gain
- Unexplained possession lose or gain
- Avoiding others (friends, family, co-workers)
- Delays payment on bills
- Excessive unexplained credit card or debit card expensive
- Excessive cash withdrawals
Problem gambling treatment services are provided to individuals and families. Services include assessment, individual and various group counseling sessions. Individual sessions are available for private discussions of concerns and evaluating treatment goals and progress. Individuals may qualify for up to four (4) initial free services.
Patients report that sessions with their individual counselors are extremely helpful. Working with your counselor, you will help select the level of intensity best designed to meet your needs. Your outpatient services are continually evaluated to ensure they remain helpful to you, and may be increased or decreased as your situation changes.
Group sessions may provide education on a variety of topics ranging from effective conflict resolution to accurate information about the effects of gambling. Group sessions are very well received by clients as it offers a time for discussion with peers about challenges and successes as each pursues their individual goals. There is always a period of acclimating to groups, after which clients find many opportunities for assisting others while also receiving assistance.
Specially trained counselors can assist patients in addressing their financial needs related to their gambling behaviors, including assessment of a patients’ financial status, establishing a budget/debt payment plan, discussing financial debt options, and creating a money management plan for the future. People needing assistance with more involved situations like bankruptcy and insurmountable debt will be referred for more extensive financial services.
There are a number of ways an individual can take steps to regain control over their gambling. One way is to request Self-Exclusion (barring yourself from the casino). At Prelude Behavioral Services we can provide counseling and guidance for you in determining if this is the best step for you to address your gambling concerns.
